THE HISTORIC CENTER OF PALERMO

Palermo conquers tourists and travellers at first glance and constantly surprises those who live this city for its continuous evolution and ferment. Very often, the first meeting with Palermo has to do with the historic centre and the Teatro Massimo, which does not leave you indifferent to the imposing beauty.
In the centre, there are dozens of monuments, squares, churches, historic buildings, endless details that tell of a past rich in culture, wealth and nobility. The possible routes to discover the historic centre are different: the discovery of historic markets such as Vucciria, Capo and Ballarò, or a visit to the main museums, such as the GAM, Palazzo Albatellis, Palazzo Riso, the Salinas Museum, Palazzo Steri or the Diocesan Museum. Cultural itineraries such as the Arab-Norman itinerary of Palermo, declared UNESCO heritage, are the example of the union of two opposing worlds: the Arab-Muslim and the Norman-Catholic worlds that in Sicily, and in Palermo in particular, have left traces memorable in monuments like the Royal Palace of the Normans, the Palatine Chapel, the Cathedral, the Church of San Giovanni degli Eremiti, the Church of the Martorana and the monumental Castello della Zisa. The historic centre of Palermo has its ideal centre at the intersection of Corso Vittorio Emanuele and Via Maqueda, where the famous Quattro Canti is located. It is an octagonal square where the four districts of the historic centre meet, forming the so-called "octagon of the sun". The Quattro Canti is about 8 minutes away from Palazzo Sovrana. The entire historic centre can be easily visited on foot by planning comfortable walks. Almost all of the historical centre is in the ZTL.
